BUMMIS Diaper Kit

I have a friend who is afraid to tiptoe into the cloth diapering world. Probably for a myriad of common reasons. It sounds complex. There is laundry. Too many options. Start-up costs. But, I think the truth is that most people that try cloth, stick with cloth. They learn that it is more economical, easier and fun.

That's where Bummis Diaper Kits come in. They have EVERYTHING a person needs to start really cloth diapering. Because doing it one diaper at a time might give you an inkling of how super cloth is. But a whole kit will get you started and going on the cloth path for good.

When I first found out Bummis had a kit, I thought it would be like some other kits I've seen online ... a set of diapers and inserts. But Oh-No. Bummis kits leave no room for error, whether you are starting from the very beginning with a newborn or with an older baby.

There are two kits available from Bummis:

INFANT SIZE, 8 - 15 pounds
  • 24 infant size (8-15 lbs) prefold diaper (4 x 8 x 4 layers thick)
  • 4 Super Whisper Wraps – small
  • 2 Super Brites – small
  • 3 rolls Bio-soft liners – small
  • 5 reusable stay dry liners
  • 1 Wet Bag – large
  • User Guide
BABY SIZE, 15 - 30 pounds
  • 18 baby size (15+ lbs) prefold diapers (4 x 8 x 4 layers thick)
  • 2 Super Whisper Wraps – medium
  • 2 Super Brites – medium
  • 1 roll Bio-soft liners – large
  • 5 reusable stay dry liners
  • 1 Wet Bag – large
  • User Guide
I know that the Baby Size has less items ... but you also change your baby less as they get older. In the beginning it's like every hour! By the time they are 15 pounds, you might be changing them 7 times a day. If you do wash every 2 - 3 days, its just enough!

So what it all this stuff that these complete cloth diaper kits contain? Well, let me explain!

Prefold Diapers:
Prefold Diapers are probably what you think of when cloth diapering comes to mind. Babies would wear them with pins back then. Now you can use them with Snappis or a cover. You can also fold them and put them in a pocket diaper as an insert. With this kit, you are going to be putting them inside a waterproof cover. This is actually a real economical way of cloth diapering, since prefolds are a great price and covers can be worn over and over throughout the day. I suggest rotating between two covers throughout the day, letting one "dry out" before using again.

The prefolds that come in the kits are organic cotton prefold diapers that are thick and ready to absorb!

Super Whisper Wraps
You get 4 of these with the Infant kit and 2 in the Baby kit. This is a cover that uses Aplix (think Velcro-ish) to close around the waist. It is waterproof laminate sandwiched between two layers of a soft polyester knit. It washes and dries real well. You can use these with prefolds, like what comes with the kit, contoured diapers or fitteds.

Special features of the Super Whisper Wrap:
  • Very adjustable. Aplix closures have an innovative overlap design that ensures a custom fit on any baby.
  • Durable, heavy-duty elastic around legs and tummy which will not wear out with repeated industrial washes.
  • Soft, smooth polyester knit bindings for a comfortable, stretchy

Super Brite Cover
This has to be my favorite Bummis cover. It was designed to ensure a perfectly diapered fit – even for those long, skinny babies that need a little extra protection around the leg. This gusseted cover closes all the gaps and it uses lycra binding to wraps softly around baby’s leg with a lot less bulk than normal gussets and no elastic to leave marks on baby’s tender skin. I find it to offer a very trim fit!

Bummis tells us:
The SUPER BRITE is lightweight and waterproof. It consists of one single layer of polyester with a wipe-clean laminated interior. This is a fabric made especially for us – by our own local suppliers. Not only is it a fabric of amazing quality, but you can be 100% certain that it adheres as well to stringent environmental and toxicity standards. Cut and sewn in our own factory in Montreal so that we are assured of good quality and fair labour practices.
Just like the Super Whisper Wrap, the Super Brite works with prefolds, contoured diapers or fitteds.

Bio-Soft Liners
This was my first experience with liners. It was pretty cool! Before these I would rinse the poopy diapers before washing to make laundry easier. With the Bio-soft liners, you no longer need to do that step. Just put a liner on the diaper and when they poop toss the liner and the poop in the toilet.

The Bio-soft Liners biodegrade very quickly. They are 100% viscose rayon, a cellulosic fibre derived from natural sources.

Re-usable Stay Dry Liners
If your baby is prone to rashes, which cloth seems to help reduce - but it still can happen, you will like the re-usable Stay Dry Liners. They help move moisture to the diaper underneath to keep your baby's bottom dry.

Wet Bag
A Wet Bag will hold your wet diapers in-between washing. This SUPER LARGE wet bag has a zipper closure, so odors won't escape! It is made of waterproof PUL to keep wetness in. And you can easily clean it ever few days with the rest of your laundry.

Now, you can see that the kit totally prepares you for cloth diapering. But Bummis has so much more that you can buy individually! There are items for potty training, other diapering options - like the Super Snaps covers (so wicked cool!), and cute re-usable swimwear too! So be sure to check it all out!

This was my first experience with any Bummis products. I have to say I was BEYOND impressed. And this is coming from a mom whose stash is mostly made up of pocket diapers. But I loved using the prefolds with the covers! I looked forward to the days that I would just rotate the covers and toss the used prefolds into the wet bag.

I definitely suggest putting Bummis Diaper Kit on a registry or saving up when pregnant to buy the kit yourself. Everything that is included in the kit is AMAZING. It will really set up a new mom with a love of cloth diapering!
