Apple Cheeks Diaper System - MORE THAN A POCKET DIAPER!

The other day I was browsing the web for new pocket diapers when I found Apple Cheeks. I read up about them and thought they were cute, colorful and trim. I also thought they had a different appearance than other pocket diapers. For example, around the legs they are gathered and it is real cute. But when I saw they were mostly available in Canada, I mistakenly thought they would be tough to order in the USA.

So I was delighted when I discovered that Apple Cheeks is becoming more well-known and available in the USA - and was THRILLED when Apple Cheeks reached out and asked whether the Mom Buzz would review one of their diapers, a hemp insert, a bamboo insert and a bamboo booster.

Straight off, when choosing a diaper, I realized that the diaper was unique in the way they are sized. There are two sizes to choose from - Size 1 and Size 2. Size 1 fits from 7 - 20 pounds. Size 2 fits from 18 - 40 pounds. Considering my skepticism for 1 size diapers - you can guess I was worried whether a diaper meant for a 40 pounds baby would fit my 25 pound baby. But I requested a size 2 to see how it would work.

Oh.My.Goodness. The fit is ... PERFECT! There is elastic on the front and back of the diaper and I can easily see how it would comfortably stretch to a larger size, as well as accommodate a moving and grooving baby. Apple Cheeks is a snap diaper, so the combination on the snaps on front and elastic around the waist really make for a great fit on my son around the waist. Now, I would imagine if you are a fan of pockets, you will end up buying a small, medium and large throughout the diapering period of your child. But with Apple Cheeks you only need to buy 2 sizes, so that cuts down your cloth diapering expense by 1/3!

Those "cute" gathers around the legs that I loved, well they are also elasticized. Once again, it seems comfortable on my son and doesn't hinder his movement at all. And thus far, no leaks or messes.

The diaper is amazingly trim. He has 1/2 the poofy butt that he normally has when wearing his Fuzzibunz. So it fits really well under shorts. With Fuzzibunz I usually have my son in size 2T shorts. But with Apple Cheeks he can wear his 18 month shorts.

The way the pocket is positioned is also very different. Instead of being at the very back, it is about 1/3 away from the back. But, it is still very easy to get a prefold or insert in there. Now, there is a reason for the pocket being designed the way it is. That's because Apple Cheeks are really a hybrid system. You can use them as a pocket diaper or as a cover with inserts (tuck the back of the insert into the back of the pocket to keep it in place). I love that! Because that means you can leave the house with just inserts rather than lots of bulky cloth diapers. Heck, with this system you will be carrying less in your diaper bag than a 'sposie loving mom. And whether you choose the cover/prefold route or the pocket route, you will always get a trim fit. Learn more by watching this video:

Now, let's move onto the fun stuff. COLOR! Currently, Apple Cheeks is available in 10 gorgeous colors, for boys and girls. I had the opportunity to get the gorgeous St. Lucia Blue on my boy, but they also have Cherry Tomato, Lemon Zest, Eucalyptus, Coriander, Sailor's Blue, Mrs. Robinson, Periwinkle, Raspberry Sorbet & Forget Me Not. I love the names of the colors!

If you recall, I mentioned that I received a hemp insert, a bamboo insert and a bamboo booster along with the diaper. Now, while I am savvy with diapers - I usually just purchase and use inserts that accompany or are recommended for a certain diaper. Now I had OPTIONS to try out. What would I think when comparing the hemp and bamboo? And how well would that booster meet my needs?

First-off, boosters are awesome if you have a heavy wetter. Place it flat in the diaper on top of the inserts and/or in the pocket on top of the inserts. Or you can fold it in half and place in the front of the diaper if you have a boy for extra absorbency right where he needs it!

Both the hemp and bamboo inserts worked equally well. They are both suggested for heavy wetters since they can retains twice as much moisture as cotton alone for its weight. And thy both have antimicrobial properties making it the healthy choice for your baby's bottom.

Apple Cheeks suggest that you do a cold pre-rinse followed by a hot wash with 1/4 cup or less of detergent (for a top loading machine). Then they recommend hanging your covers to dry and either machine-drying or line drying the inserts. I personally do both with my cloth diapers - I line dry and I use the dryer. So for the past month with my washing/drying method the diaper is doing very well. It is in great condition and I love it on my little man.

I admit, I am a pocket mama. But I did try using it as a cover and really had no issues. It still worked GREAT with no LEAKS. So, whether you love the convenience of pockets or the more economical cover w/prefolds option - Apple Cheeks has your baby covered. I highly suggest them. Apple Cheeks is widely available in Canada and now I am starting to see it coming into the USA. You can learn more about where to purchase Apple Cheeks Hybrid System at Apple Cheeks: Where to Buy.
