I recently had the opportunity to test out the Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer (Model IRT 4520).
Now, if you follow the Mom Buzz you know I am very attached to my Exergen Temporal Scanner Infrared Thermometer. But, not all moms are comfortable using a Temporal Scanner. Some prefer taking a child's temperature rectally or in the armpit - which I would then suggest the ComfortFlex Vicks Thermometer. Finally, some moms might find it easier to take a quick temperature reading in their child's ear. In this instance, I suggest the Braun ThermoScan.
When I first unpackaged it, I thought Keegan would NEVER let me take his temperature in his ear. This kid runs from me whenever I try to clean behind his ear, let alone stick something in his ears. But surprisingly he stood still the mere second I needed to get a reading. Honestly, it took maybe 5 seconds. So then I took Lochlan's temperature. Once again, the Braun read it in a snap.
HOW TO USE:
It's simple. You push the Start Button. You push the I/O button. It does an internal self-check then gives you a "ready" beep. You fit the probe into the ear canal, push and release the start button and seconds later it will beep to let you know that it has taken the temperature.
What's really cool about the Braun ThermoScan is that it has this ExacTemp sensor that lights up green when securely positioned in an ear canal. A great help when reading the temperature of your child!
It also remembers the last 8 temperature readings - a plus when you are hectic mom trying to care for a sick child.
WHY THE EAR?
Why do you want to measure the temperature in the ear? Ear temperatures reflect the core body temperature, so it will show fever spikes and temperature drops sooner than other areas of the body.
WHY NOT ORALLY OR RECTALLY?
Oral temperatures are influenced by drinking and sucking in cool air. And rectal temperatures often LAG behind changes in core body temperatures and there is always the risk of contamination.
I would definitely keep the Braun ThermoScan Booklet as a guide when you make this purchase. It gives you the range of normal body temperatures for different parts of the body (axillary, oral, rectal, ear) and the ranges by age!
Only use the thermometer with a lens filter. It comes with filters and you can purchase more wherever Braun Thermoscans are sold.
You can purchase the Braun Thermoscan Model IRT 4520 for $48.79 at Target! Moms-to-be, you can always add this to your baby registry!
Choosing the right thermometer can be tricky! But what I love about all three thermometers I've mentioned on the Mom Buzz is that they are QUICK and ACCURATE! So choose your style and you have your thermometer!
