Health Buzz: Comparing Apples to Oranges ...

Soon you will be able to easily compare apples to oranges when shopping at a major grocery store in the United States. You will also be able to compare blueberries with lobster. And turkey breast with baby back ribs. All thanks to the ONQI algorithm developed by David Katz, MD.

Don't worry, you won't need to exchange your pocket calculator for a fancy, graphing calculator - the stores will be marking the food for you with an easy to understand rating system based on their nutritional value. Behind the scenes the scientists have already figured out the complex calculatons, taking into consideration the vitamins, fiber, whole grains, salt, sugar and transfat.

The higher the score, the better the food is for you. Blueberries are on the top of the list at 100. Pineapple, a favorite of many pregnant women, gets a 99. Coconut is a 24. Turkey Breast gets a 48. Pork Baby Back Ribs a 24. Atlantic Salmon Fillet scores a high 87. Delicious lobster a 36 - I am sure that is without the butter.
